Snow Day

Big snow (for us) was 4½”, falling much of the day Sunday 1/25/2026, ending with another 1″ of sleet after I’d snow-blown the driveway.

Then that white ice lasted almost three weeks. We found we could drive over it, but walking was very difficult. Eventually I levered-up a shovelfull at a time to make a single path the length of the driveway. And on a friend’s advice, I spread pelletized limestone hoping to add traction. After the ice melted this week, the lime remained on the asphalt. Photo Feb 14th 2026.

Belmont

The Melchers’ sun room, added about 1920 to their 1795 home at Falmouth, Virginia. (My first time allowed inside, helping the curator remove a Christmas decoration.) On the left, as Gareth pointed out, is Long Walk beyond the row of boxwoods. To the right are the stone studio and galleries.

Dad’s 101st

Nick’s pic of Dad on his 101st birthday.

More pics to come from Dad’s family birthday weekend. Meanwhile, following is a 1993 USGS satellite image including Dad’s 28 acres. I had been hoping to find the subsequent satellite image I remember clearly showing the X in the oats field (which here appears as a perfectly clear rectangle). The corn field and the punkin field also appear clear here. We never knew what to make of the strange spiral formation on the neighbor’s property to the right.

Brave chimney sweep

That’s a 40′ ladder which he put up and took down without help but not without difficulty. The task was to repair the crown, the rubberized cement which surrounds the chimney pot. The stainless steel chimney cap (temporarily parked between roof and ladder) did not need replacing.
