David Ridout died peacefully at his home in the early hours of April 6th, 2025, six weeks shy of his 104th birthday. He had enjoyed remarkably good health almost his whole life. Wena, his wife of 59 years, had died at home almost exactly twenty years earlier.
Survivors include the first three of their four sons Edwin (Sandy), Gareth (Nancy), Nick, and Robin, grandchildren Beth (Mike Violette), Elspeth (Tim McCormick), and Erin (Sheara Williamson) , and great-grandchildren Nick, Owen, Anna, Dylan, Cora, and Rhys. Daughter-in-law Judi had passed away in 2018.
A 60-year resident of Export, Pennsylvania, David had begun his career as a valve engineer in London during World War II, contributing to development of radar and sonar. After the family came to America on the Queen Mary in 1963, he worked on color television research for Westinghouse in Pittsburgh. In the 1970s, he created his own specialty metals business producing components for making integrated circuits.
David and Wena had been enthusiastic participants in first English and then Scottish country dancing. He took up fiddle playing in his sixties, and once brought home a $25 prize from the highland games in Ligonier. Both were avid gardeners. Early interest in wine making gave way to brewing after he found out how much his sons were spending on beer.
